Improved access to clean water brings a lot more than H20 to vulnerable communities.
On World Water Day, we celebrate progress in improving access to clean water everywhere: between 1990 and 2023, 2.3 billion people gained a better, safer source of water. At the same time, we spotlight the challenges that remain:
844 million people still lack basic access to clean water.
2.3 billion cannot access safe sanitation. Contaminated water can cause diseases like cholera and diarrhea to spread, and those illnesses can make it harder for children to absorb nutrients in their food, leading to malnutrition.
Each day, an estimated 1,000 children die of preventable waterborne diseases.
Conflict and climate change contribute to the scarcity of clean water in many parts of the world. Droughts are becoming more frequent and severe. Flooding destroys and contaminates water sources. War and insecurity make it more difficult for farmers to get to their fields and for food to reach markets.
Ensuring access to clean water, safe sanitation, and good hygiene goes hand-in-hand with our efforts to improve health and nutrition. Action Against Hunger this work in three primary ways:
In a crisis, we truck water into communities, repair water sources, and install storage tanks and reservoirs. Where water is scarce or unsafe, we drill new wells and decontaminate unsafe ones, install hand pumps, protect natural springs, and tap aquifers, rehabilitate damaged infrastructure, and pipe water into hard-to-reach villages and health centers.
To prevent outbreaks of illnesses that can lead to malnutrition, our teams distribute hygiene kits and build latrines and handwashing stations. We provide and promote water filters and teach healthy practices like handwashing, cooking with clean utensils, and drawing water from protected sources.
We partner closely with communities to foster sustainable, long-term change. We set up and train local water committees, made up of elected community members, to independently manage water sources and sanitation infrastructure. We also organize local health workers and volunteers to model good sanitation and hygiene practices for their neighbors long after we leave.
With clean water comes health for children, resilience for communities, opportunities for women, and hope for all. Today, we bring you four stories of how clean water is changing lives.
